Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) is a region-specific panel with the mandate of
promoting economic cooperation and free trade within the 21 member economies. APEC was established in 1989 due to the increasingly more interdependent nature of the Asia-Pacific economies. Further, with the establishment of the European Union and other regional economic blocs, the APEC was a natural response. The three guiding pillars for the organization are: trade and investment liberalization, business facilitation, and economic and technical cooperation. The panel of member economies also addresses socio-economic issues such as poor living conditionsand education.
