The Security Council is primarily concerned with maintaining international security and peace. There are fifteen nations currently represented in the Security Council, including five permanent members that possess veto power: the United States, the United Kingdom, France, the People's Republic of China, and the Russian Federation. The elected members this year are Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Gabon, Japan, Lebanon, Mexico, Nigeria, Turkey, and Uganda. They are elected for two year terms by the General Assembly. Many consider the Security Council to be the most important of all the United Nations organs, as this committee considers recommendations from other organs, enacts decisions, and is responsible for carrying out the final courses of action. The Council may decide on enforcement measures, economic sanctions, or collective military action.
