This committee, known as the Social, Humanitarian, and Cultural committee of the United Nations, is the third committee in the General Assembly. All 191 UN member states are represented by delegates in SOCHUM, making this committee one of the biggest one in UN. It is also one of the most important committee for its wide jurisdiction of issues ranging from prostitution, discrimination, overpopulation, and refugees. SOCHUM strives to promote the social, humanitarian and cultural welfare of the international population; some of the actions by SOCHUM in the past include preparation for cooperatives in social development, strengthening cooperation in preventing and combating trafficking in persons, strengthening international drug control, and elimination of all forms of discrimination against women. This committee, due to the numerous and various resolutions it passes, works cooperatively with multitude of other organizations such as UN Childrens Fund, UN Development Program, UN Environmental Program, World Health Organization, and UN High Commissioner for Refugees.
