The European Union is a regional body which acts as a political and economic union of twenty-seven countries of Europe. The body’s aim is to provide a single market and  standardized system of laws for member states. In essence, the European Union allows freedom of movement of goods, services, and people throughout Europe.

Unlike United Nations committees, the European Union as a body has more power to
implement direct actions within its regions. The European Parliament, Council of the European Union, and European Commission work together to draft and implement legislation. Actions by the European Union affect a region which has a population of 500 million and generates twenty percent of the world GDP.
