JCC Soccer Wars: El SalvadorEl Salvador
Crisis Director: Michele Bilko Chairs: Drea Chakravorty & Alexandra Notkin Email: micbil23@bergen.org Topic: Soccer Wars El Salvador and Honduras have had a rocky relationship, especially since the 1960s, when an influx of Salvadoran illegal immigrants flooded into Honduras. Civil tensions in Honduras and a new leader in the seat of power, Oswaldo López Arellano, further worsened relations. Lopez mistreated the Salvadoran immigrants and blamed them for stealing Honduran land and jobs from the Honduran people. Eventually, Honduras began evicting these immigrants. However, El Salvador was too densely populated to take all of them. The only respite to these tensions? Football, or Soccer for those living in the land of the free. During the 1970 World Cup Qualifiers, both Honduras and El Salvador came out at the top in their respective qualifying tables, meaning they must now play against each other three times! What will happen during these games? Who will win? And will the results incite a war? ![]()
